But by installing the right weatherstripping, you may notice a huge effect on your utility bills. You may not feel the cold air coming through a door or window, but if that air is there, you'll definitely feel it once you get your utility bill. Drafts can get pricey. It's much cheaper to fix them than it is to pay for all of the heat or air conditioning you're losing. For drafty doors, start by installing a threshold. Thresholds fill the gap between the floor and the bottom of the door. When choosing a threshold, it should have about a half-inch gap for the vinyl bulb. Many times you're going to need to cut the threshold down to fit your particular door. For aluminum thresholds, use a hacksaw. For wood, a fine-toothed handsaw should do the trick. Once it's cut, you're going to need some caulk and screws to attach it to the floor. When the threshold is in place, it's time for the weatherstripping.
